The Asian American Government Executives Network (AAGEN) is honoring Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead today with the Outstanding Public Service Award "for his exemplary leadership in promoting diversity in the most senior ranks of the U.S. Navy,” states an AAGEN press release.

With an unwavering commitment to diversity, Adm. Roughead is one of only two officers to have commanded the fleets in both the Pacific and Atlantic.

AAGEN, a nonprofit organization made up of the highest-ranking Asian Pacific American career and appointed government executives, will also present the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award to Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, at its 11th Annual Awards Banquet in Arlington, Va.

According to Navy Times, about 50,000 Asian and Pacific Americans serve in the Navy, with nearly 19,000 in uniform. That includes 11 members of the Senior Executive Service, six flag officers, three others selected for their first star and 137 master chiefs.

For more on the Navy's diversity commitment, watch Vice Admiral Mark E. Ferguson , Chief of Naval Personnel with the U.S. Department of Navy, at DiversityInc's learning event.

DiversityInc's next learning event in Washington, D.C., will be on Nov. 8–9 and will offer federal agencies tips on evolving their diversity-management strategies. For information, click here.
