Our mission is to drive traffic to our web site. Stories must quickly pique the interest of readers and deliver concise information that can only be found on DiversityInc.com. Our writing style is sophisticated and story angles are unique to us, meaning they will not be found in mainstream media.
When pitching, we're interested in:
• Myth busting: These stories spin off reports, studies or issues and offer a tell-it-like-it-REALLY-is edge.
• Career and financial advice: We want fresh story ideas that offer culturally competent workplace advice.
• Innovative news gathering: From new legislation to the latest online chatter, we publish diversity news that's delivered in a fresh manner (i.e., man-on-the-street videos or cell-phone images of something outrageous that you've seen).
• First-person commentary: The tone must offer an alternative, non-mainstream insight, and topics that get accepted typically springboard off politics/social issues.
• Other workplace topics of interest: Dress for success (fashion), hair care, food, wine, entertainment.
When reporting:
• Look for video, web links and other multimedia sources (if possible).
• Use no more than four sources: We are not interested in quoting consultants or book authors with self-serving interests. Also, when applicable, include opposing opinions.
• Provide takeaway: Don't just report on diversity challenges; offer constructive, practical solutions as well.
• Use real-life examples: Back up your reporting with supportive statistics/facts.
When delivering your work:
• Include video and audio files (not only print) to communicate/support your message.
• Use traffic-driving writing style: To-the-point heads, short paragraphs, concise sentences, a maximum of no more than four sources (but no less than two). Online articles should be no longer than 400 to 500 words in length.
• Proof your own work (carefully) for grammar, spelling, etc.
• Promote your work: Include at least four external related, popular web sites with each story in which you will promote your work to drive traffic to DiversityInc.com.
• Include display type: Avoid clever copy. Instead, use straightforward, provocative language (preferably a question) that encourages the reader to continue.
• Supply fact-checking contacts: Include phone, e-mail and URLs for all sources.
