Most Americans say racism is widespread against Blacks, according to a recent USA Today/Gallup poll. In fact, most believe racism is a major factor affecting prison rates for Blacks in the United States, and a majority feel racism adversely affects education, income and even life expectancy for Blacks. The poll surveyed nearly 1,940 U.S. adults (31 percent were Black, 25 percent were Latino and 43 percent were white) and weighted responses to represent their correct proportions in the U.S. population.

Here are seven highlights from the study:

• Fifty-one percent of whites believe racism against Blacks is widespread in the United States, compared with 59 percent of Latinos and 78 percent of Blacks
• Fifty-seven percent of Blacks said racial discrimination against Blacks is a major factor in life expectancy, compared with 25 percent of whites and 40 percent of Latinos
• Eighty percent of Blacks feel racial discrimination has led to a higher percentage of Blacks incarcerated, compared with 54 percent of Latinos and 44 percent of whites
• Both Blacks and Latinos agree racial discrimination is a major factor in the education levels of Blacks, while most whites believe racial discrimination is a minor factor
• Sixty-seven percent of respondents who are Democrats say racism is widespread against Blacks, while thirty-nine percent of respondents who are Republican say the same
• Fifty-five percent of respondents who identify themselves politically as independents say racism is widespread against Blacks
• Fifty-five percent of whites believe racism against whites is not widespread, compared to 62 percent of Blacks and 60 percent of Latinos
