Obama Won't Be First Black President
By the Editors of DiversityInc - Nov 11, 2008

Keywords: Election 2008, Barack Obama, Black, Presidental Election, McCain

You've seen the headlines: "Are Americans Ready for a Black President?" "Is Obama Black Enough?" "Obama: America's First Black President?"

Ever since the nation first met Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in 2004, his race has been called into question more times than Michael Jackson's. Obama is clearly a black man, but is this really a breakthrough? Some blacks say Obama isn't "black enough," which seems ironic because for many blacks, former President Bill Clinton was "black enough." In 2001, Clinton was honored as the nation's "first black president" at the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Annual Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C.

Were there other "black" presidents? Some historians have reason to believe  people don't really understand the genealogy of past U.S. Presidents. Research shows at least five U.S. presidents had black ancestors and Thomas Jefferson, the nation's third president, was considered the first black president, according to historian Leroy Vaughn, author of Black People and Their Place in World History.

Vaughn's research shows Jefferson was not the only former black U.S. president. Who were the others? Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. But why was this unknown? How were they elected president? All five of these presidents never acknowledged their black ancestry.

Jefferson, who served two terms between 1801 and 1809, was described as the "son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a Virginia mulatto father," as stated in Vaughn's findings. Jefferson also was said to have destroyed all documentation attached to his mother, even going to extremes to seize letters written by his mother to other people.

President Andrew Jackson, the nation's seventh president, was in office between 1829 and 1837. Vaughn cites an article written in The Virginia Magazine of History that Jackson was the son of an Irish woman who married a black man. The magazine also stated that Jackson's oldest brother had been sold as a slave.

Lincoln, the nation's 16th president, served between 1861 and 1865. Lincoln was said to have been the illegitimate son of an African man, according to Leroy's findings. Lincoln had very dark skin and coarse hair and his mother allegedly came from an Ethiopian tribe. His heritage fueled so much controversy that Lincoln was nicknamed "Abraham Africanus the First" by his opponents.

President Warren Harding, the 29th president, in office between 1921 and 1923, apparently never denied his ancestry. According to Vaughn, William Chancellor, a professor of economics and politics at Wooster College in Ohio, wrote a book on the Harding family genealogy. Evidently, Harding had black ancestors between both sets of parents. Chancellor also said that Harding attended Iberia College, a school founded to educate fugitive slaves.

Coolidge, the nation's 30th president, served between 1923 and 1929 and supposedly was proud of his heritage. He claimed his mother was dark because of mixed Indian ancestry. Coolidge's mother's maiden name was "Moor" and in Europe the name "Moor" was given to all blacks just as "Negro" was used in America. It later was concluded that Coolidge was part black.

The only difference between Obama and these former presidents is that none of their family histories were fully acknowledged by others. Even though Obama is half-white, he strongly resembles his Kenyan father. And not only is Obama open about his ancestry, most people acknowledge him as a black man, which is why people will identify Obama, if elected, as the first black president of the United States.

Historically, the definition of an Afro American is a racially mixed person of African descent - not just an African that migrated to America.

The majority of Afro Americans are racially mixed. That is why our skin color and hair texture varies. When our ancestors were brought to America and during the Jim Crow era, there were no laws to protect African or Black American females from being raped and impregnated by white men.

In America, racist do not judge people by who their ancestors are they judge people by skin color only.

Having black lineage that goes unperceived does not make you the first black president. The concept of whiteness and blackness is a social construct. If in society, someone is perceived to be white, then they are white. Those who elected these past presidents were electing 'white' male presidents, not black presidents. Obama will be, if he wins, the first and only intentionally elected, socially considered, Black president. This distinction makes all the difference. An American society has never intended to elect anyone other than whites males, and that's all we have done so far.

Interesting comment from "a chase" about concept of whiteness and blackness as a social construct. Today, the Cherokee Freeman are fighting for their Native American inheritance in which they equate their nationality not their skin color. For years, they have been seen as members of this tribal nation until recently.

All of this is true. I was taught this in school But not everyone was taught this history nor would the like to believe it. People do go by the color of your skin and the past presidents that were mixed appeared to be white. So now that Obama is mixed but appears to be black people are considering him the first black president. But he is mixed just like the othere presidents above so he is not the first black president.

This is good to know why isn't this taught in the history books.

Obama should also be noted as the first "African" American President, since his Father is from Kenya and mother although white is an American citizen!!!

While I realize that there might be some historical interest in the notion that some American president may have been "passing", it is not germane to the present situation. The point is that, while some American presidents might have had black ancestry, America has never elected a president that was "openly Black".

We don't know if there has ever been a gay president or an atheist president or a president that was a victim of child abuse. What we do know that, in America, Barack Obama is Black - despite the White part of his heritage. That is the point and that is the issue.

The rest are little more that a historical curiosity ... and a sad commentary on this nation's history of race, racism and racial identity.

It is ironic that Americans in the U.S.talk about race as if it is biological, especially as it relates to 'mixed race' or being Black. As one reader commented, race is a social construct. Outside of the U.S., most Black Americans would be considered 'mixed race'. Most Black Americans' genealogy is some combination of African, Native American and European ancestry. However, historically, prohibitions were made on people in the U.S. who were designated as Black; and a person was Black if he/she was 1/16 or 1/32 Black, depending on the state. However,in the 21st century, in the spirit of diversity and understanding a person has the right to define him or herself, Obama can be Black, mixed race or White. That is his choice However, if elected, he will be the first U.S. president perceived as Black or 'mixed race'.

Just exactly what does that mean?

Is it because he is articulate; because he is a father who cares for and about his family; because of the way he dresses? I just don't get it!

I have three adult children who were ostracized during their school years because they spoke properly and politely. They were and still are deemed not black enough!

I whole-heartedly agree with Bill Cosby's views on this issue.

.
Posted Sunday Aug 31, 2008 by Guest;

I agree entirely with A. Chase. People have been hiding their ancestry for years.

Even those of us who are Black often fail to acknowledge our White ancestors.

With full knowledge of his ancestry Barack Obama will go down in history as our first Black President who openly celebrates and embraces his ancestry.

.
Posted Sunday Aug 31, 2008 by Guest;

I would agree that "Obama" would not be the first acknowledged "Black president." Albeit, all of the aforementioned "Bi-Racial" presidents were acknowledged as "White Men" due to the times and nature of things during that era. Would it not be a wonderful thing if they were acknowledged as "Bi-Racial" and having the best of both worlds?

My sons are "Bi-Racial." They are both successful, intelligent, articulate, and responsible adults. They have received the best of both worlds through their parents, grandparents, and family; as are my Grandchildren.

Thank you for this article. It is very informative and should be communicated throughout the world!

I find it a curious thing that we continue to support the one drop rule. Meaning that if one possesses one drop of Black blood you are automatically considered Black. Obama is half African and half White. He is a Biracial person who has chosen to define himself as Black based solely on his skin color. That is his perogative. He is still the product of a White mother. Why is it that a White woman can birth a Black child but a Black woman cannot birth a White child?

.
Posted Tuesday Sep 2, 2008 by Guest;

This just goes to show that it matters NOT the color of one's skin !!! As Dr. King once hoped, we should be judged by content of character. For historical value this issue is very important for African-Americans but we are not the ones in denial over the issue of Race in America. There are far too many of us that are not 100% anything if we were to trace back our ancestry. The most important thing in this is that Barack Obama is not denying either side of his ancestry as did some former presidents and that in itself should drive home a lesson to everyone !!

As a retired labor and delivery nurse, I want to point out that when filling out birth certificates new parents are given the choice as to what the race of their child is. If a parent does not specify the race of the child, the child is given the race of the mother.

So for all intents and purposes, Senator Obama is a white man. Nevertheless, he is the BEST man for the job!

I hope that with Mr Obama becoming president there will be some racial healing.America will never be the great nation she is supposed to be if she continues to be at war with herself.

good point (Felice B) about the "one drop" rule.

...why can't a black woman give birth to a white child, but a white woman give birth to a black child?

I am a 66 years Deaf-American who is also Jewish. I was raised by Latinos. My beloved late stepmom whose parents came from Mexico taught me to respect everyone regardless of their national origin, ethnecity, race, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, etc. It always rankled me whenever I see other people being oppressed because of what they are. I was very fortunate to work for the US Postal Service for 37 years. They have a very good diversity policy. I am very happy to see someone like Senator Obama running for the presidency of the US. I can only hope that others look beyond race to see what he can do for all Americans. So whatever you do, please VOTE! Thank you.

Who really cares, Obama is of mixed race now days they call it molata, as history say, if you have one drop of black blood, then the child is black. I just want the man to go in and win this race. We need him to get this country back on tract.

Thanks for this informative article. I had never heard these details before. I am glad Senator Barack Obama acknowledges his heritage. I pray that enough people in our country will look beyond race and gender and select the appropriate person for this time in our country's history. I believe that the Obama/Biden team is the team that should lead our country. Give this man a chance. Pray for him and trust God to guide our country as it should be.

In a time when our econonmy is at its worst, I hope that our country will look beyond skin color and vote Obama the next president because he is the best choice we have. I believe that he deserves a chance to turn this country around. There are many blacks who could do it, but only one has taken the initiative to do so at this time. McCain erred by choosing Sarah Palin for many reasons. It would be a travisty for McCain to die in office and leave her to guide our country. Her family needs her more than we do. Soccer moms and Hillary supporters don't be fooled.

I just wanted to say how enlightening this topic is ; We all to often assume someone is of a certain "color" based on the visual amount of pigment in their skin. It always seems to come down to ASSumption of knowledge as opposed to consumption of knowledge.

My sister-in-law made a good point, that in Germany, two of my nieces would be considered black, and the other one who until she was two she was extermely fair and had stark blonde hair & blue eyes would be considered white...

Race is based more on the color of skin, some people will give me flack for saying I'm a black american, not an african american, because not all my ancestors were from africa, but clear from skin color I am black.

I think that is why it is easier for white woman to give birth to a black child than a black woman to give birth a white child. No conspiracy there... just genetics, even though it has been done before.

Obama is a black man, with a white mother, but say he was born looking like Victoria Rowell's daughter who is doesn't look black AT ALL and who considers herself to be white, then that would be different.

She doesn't deny the black side of her family, but clearly she is white.

I think saying Obama is a white man is absurd when clearly you can see that he is not... He looks blacker than many of the people in my family who consider themselves to be Black American even though we have Native American and European ancestory as well.

I think we are far to focused on race here in American, but if we are gonna focus on it, call it for what it is...

It looks like some of us are still stuck with the issue of race than the real problems facing this great nation bad economy, iraq, health care, education, etc. The U.S. is a world leader and should model diversity and inclusion not division anymore. We must move forward as one nation because we are all in this together, and together, we can make a difference.

Really skin in this type of situation does not matter.

Clinton was def. white and there were black voters for her as long as there are white voters for Obama.

Even if Obama is half white people are going to look at him as Black because the darker dominate trait will always appear over the lighter recessive trait so really there's no fuss over the color of his skin its the fuss over his ancestors traits. You cant really compare Obama to past presidents because they might have had black ancestors but they may not have had black in themselves as Obama does. I just think thats its a racist thing going on. People dont want to see at Black or half black man make it in this world of hardships. That;s just what i think!

I do not care what color Obama is.

As long as He sticks by what He is promising to do for the citizens of the United States, He gets my vote in November. I feel that He can relate to the average American much more so than John McCain. The man knows what a struggle it is to climb up the econmic ladder.

Clinton was the first president who cared about to well-being of every citizen; not just blacks, not just whites, not just democrats, not just republicans. And because he was white he was able to convince the majority. Obama, a man of similar ethics, may not be portrayed that way. People get mad and uncomfortable everyday when ethnity is discussed, but how can it be overlook in this unopenly racist society? Thomas Jefferson wouldn't have been publicizing the fact that he had black lineage. I would think he'd see it as somewhat of a crutch. And to honor someone who probably denied his black lineage as the first "black" president is highly insulting. Sure, mother nature doesn't care about race, but when has our country cared about mother nature(global warming)? Today, only the surface matters....and the surface of Obama's skin is black and not everybody's ok or comfortable with seeing a black man become president. Obama is definitely the better candidate, but what will the majority say?

I am a mixed race woman. I'm 1/4 Hungarian, 1/4 Swedish and 1/2 Portuguese. How is that any different than Obama's ancestry? I do not understand why people in this country still have not grown up and realized that the skin of one's color makes absolutely no difference. All that matters, in the race for the Presidency is whether or not they have the best interests of this country at heart, and whether they can do the job. Anything else is umbrage and rooted in insecurity and fear.

Obama will be a great president. He carries the dreams of white , black and everyone in between. To the lady that think being a 1/4 swedish, 1/4 irish and 1/4 english doesn't understand what multiracial means since these are white folks with different ethnic groups.

.

If people would stop and think. How can they say that they are white, black, ect... Me myself I may be white but I am also German, Irish and Indian. So I dont think that we are all white, all black, etc... I think Obama will make just as good a President as any white man or woman. I get so tired of hearing about him beeing black. I just like the things he is talking about doing for the people. Anyone who can't see past the color of skin needs to look deep inside themselves and see they are no different than the person standing next to them at the bus stop, at the store, at work, or even at the schools.

The other day, someone asked me why Obama characterized himself as "black" and not bi-racial; I was asked this as a Caucasian mom of an American son, with Caribbean and Swiss heritage (in otherwords bi-racial and bi-cultural) like Obama. Why can't we all just be Americans first, especially our children. Personally, I am working towards a shift in American cultural dynamics where we are not characterized first by the color of our skin....maintaining a black/white/Asian/Latino stereotype ignores the cultural heritage of where we are all from....and this cultural heritage is important to all of us, especially our kids!

.

How is 1/4 Hungarian, 1/4 Swedish and 1/2 Portuguese "mixed race"? Those all equal European which is "White" according to the U.S Census.

Of course you can call yourself whatever you want to make yourself feel special and different, just don't expect other people to buy it.

Hah, Obama's presidency will please world's peoples because this has been a victory in modern sense as he appears to be the first black president (regardless of historical ones who might have black ancestry yet look invisibaly black). Who says color isnt important? In our modern sense, election of a black president in U S means fairness,

integrity, lesser racial prejudise

and intimacy to all moniroties

in STATES/

However, to be honest, black ppl in US account for a majority of poorly-educated, low class and even problematic groups \.

Maybe everyone could be wondering if Obama would help strengthen

the steadiness of US society by means of diminishing racial problems and bettering the black ppl's farewell and social echelon.

Only future tells...

He is African American. His father is african and his mother american. That doesn't make him the same as being a native of the african american community. He was raised by white people. So, he's had an outsiders knowledge of black culture. It's like learning a new language and moving to that country and expecting to be like a native.

Everyone wants to just wipe the slate clean and call everyone Americans without atonement for the racially based sins of this country.

Reconciliation starts with the US government, acting on behalf of its populus issuing a sincere and meaningful apology for enslaving stolen, bought and otherwise procured Africans and their progeny.

Decent people apologize for their wrongs before expecting to be forgiven.

I think we all forget that President-Elect Obama is a politician. Regardless of his race, ethnicity, religion, economic status, etc. we need to keep in mind that he is a politician first and foremost. The man was voted into office for his political leanings and not the color of his skin. He has made promises to the citizens of these United States just like every other politician that has been elected to office. If we were all blind (which we should be when it comes to voting) we would not realize that he may have a darker skin tone than we may do, but one thing is for certain - he needs to live up to his promises. They got him to the White House and he needs to prove to us that we were not wrong is sending him there. If he does not live up to those promises than he is a failed politician like so many in the past. Color should have nothing to do with the man that holds the most important job in the world, but integrity does. We need to stand behind our new president for what he stands for and not because he may happen to be the first "black" man elected to office (has everyone forgotten that his mother was white?).

Actually all people on this planet Earth originated from Africa,There is only one race, the human race so there cannot be mixed races, bi-racial.race is a purely American construct devised in the Slavery period to denie people of color rights that the US Constitution and British law guaranteed to all men.

The Americans made the "one drop rule", and white Americans need to wake up and learn about the truth of the enslavement of Africans and maybe after their learning and understanding of the Slave period the problems of unfairness that exists in American society can be dealt with, and the true greatness that awaits America will be achieved.

Thank you for this fascinating article. I have ancestors from all over Europe, but recently through genealogical research, I discovered that my uncle's father was listed on the census as Black, then 10 years later, he was listed on the census as White. That was a surprise to me and everyone else in the family, and it really opened my eyes to the fluidity of "race" in this country. Your article has bolstered that opinion and given me reasons to research all of these presidents' backgrounds further! Thank you.

This was some very helpful information. Our new President has an almost impossible mess to clean up, and it can't happen in one term. If he's not successful in his first term he'll probably be voted out of office. When a white President mess up he's relected to continue to see if he can correct his mistakes. Every time we get someone in office that half way clean things up hot heads vote them out of office. Pray for our new President and give him a chance to help this country.

As an African American, I'm really sick and tired of this kind of nonsense. It's like some weird form of self-catharsis--"Please God, let there be some famous people who had black blood like me." By the standards of this author, half the members of the 2008 Congress could be secretly black. Puleeeeeeeze.

Why can't we accept the fact that black blood historically has been the least wanted racial/ethnic heritage. We don't have to try to make ourselves feel better with wild, ridiculous assertions that this president or that president was incognegro. We don't have to perpetuate the one-drop rule created by the enemies of our enslaved ancestors. If we're going to try to claim a half-dozen white presidents as secretly one of us, we have to claim some Klansmen and ordinary factory workers and "trailer trash" as incognegro. Or do we only attach this "gift" to people of prominence?

I'm one-eigth Irish. Exactly one-eigth because my mother is one-fourth and my grandmother one-half, and her father 100%. I'm more Irish than some of these presidents are black. I don't see the Irish feeling the need to claim me.

Black folks, please, get over it. People who posit this kind of nonsense are the kind of folks who claim Jesus looked like Samuel L. Jackson.

Obama is the first black president. Period.

All of the presidents on that cover( except Barack Obama ) look white. Thomas Jefferson live in the 1700's!!!! Abe was born on the 1800's!!!! We may never find out if Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, Coolidge, Harding, and Jackson are really Black. I think Barack Obama is the ONLY Black President. Until the people in this world find out that Barack Obama is not the first Black President and Jefferson is the REAL first Black President then I am still going to think that Barack Obama is our 44th President and the ONLY Black President.

this article is crazy. in one way or another, it seems like certain people are trying to take away that title from obama. which will never happen. no matter how hard they try obama will always be the first BLACK president..the people who may think hes not black enough, all i can say is get over it. he had the courage to attempt to run for president. and when others see someone doing something that they didnt think was possible, they want to start talking trash and saying a whole lot of negative things. its because of what he had the courage to do, that many people, especially young people, will be able to get that extra boost of courage and become anything that they want to be. if obama was the blackest of them all and both parents were black, people would say hes too black...i think that people should just accept it and move on with their lives. i will be the first to say that i never thought that i would live to see this day and now that its here, im soaking it all up.i m loving it right now, and theres nothing that anyone can say or do to make me feel other wise.lastly, the whole thing about clinton being honored as the first black president, thats a bunch of bullcrap. now clinton may of had some "black tendecies", according to some people. but the fact is, clinton has never been black, nor will he ever be. and for people to actually honor him as being the first black president was kind of sending a message to black people. telling them that this is the closes we will ever be to being president...so now when i see obama, i can take my hat off to him. for once in my life it feels like home. i can look at a flag and proudly recite the pledge. and most of all he was able to prove a lot of people wrong and take the title, that shouldnt of been given away, and give it back to black people. and for that BARACK OBAMA WILL AND ALWAYS BE THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA..lol..i love it, and for the people who dont agree, to hell with you, just know that he will go down in history as being the FIRST...OUR FIRST

.

That's a fact, he's not. He's the first that "looks" black. It's a shame the respect he had for his grandmother was "typical white woman" but it appears he has a more endearing feeling about his wife's mother as she will be living in the White House. Other black men have run as Independents, but no one has won when running as an Independent, black or white. So, I believe Obama is the first black man that has run as a Republican or Democrate, which means by his winning the election the black man has a 100% average of running and winning. So, why all the to do about us "finally" voting a black man into office, it's been our first opportunity to do so!

This article represents the fact that no one should have racial prejudices because they may be of that race. It is said that Hitler himself had Jewish ancestry. Some of the people who have posted comments have stated that this article comes from one of the people who wants to take something from Obama. People have been researching the lineage of past presidents decades before Obama even stepped onto the political scene. I just believe that this brings everything full circle.

I can remember when people who had different race parents were called "whiteies" by blacks. They were snubbed. Now, because Obama is President he's the First Black President. Why can't you say that this man was elected because he had visions of helping our country, because you agreed he had a plan to help our country instead of bragging that he is the first black President and fighting, calling names to those who might disagree because history tells a different story. How sad that he may have been elected to prove a point that a black can be President instead of his desire to do something for our country. Time will tell whether he can live up to his visions. If he fails, then I suppose you all who are arguing over his color will decide to call him a whiteie.

Who really cares what the Hell the ethnicity of the President is?!?

It's not that kind of 'race' he won anyway! That's not an important question; "What's his ethnicity?", the question should be, "What can he do for the American People?". And that means ALL people!! I don't care if you're black, whte, yellow or green; can you help America?!?

I've been more interested in the facts that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and that he was a community organizer (good for bringing people and countries and political parties together) than that he is (half) black. But his color is still notable, especially given the history of the civil rights movement. More to the point, he's of more than one race, a good symbol of unification of a diverse country if ever there was one, and he's already a globetrotter, which doesn't hurt when working with other countries abroad.

I dont see any reason why obama gets so much attention for being the "first black president' if you look into history evryone has black descent and i could understand if he was a 100 percent black but his mother is not black

He is the 1st Black President of the USA, because he is the only one who has black skin. during slavery, he would have been a slave because of the colour of his skin. He has never been able to "pass" as prvious presidents may have. He is a Black man. When you look at him, you see a Black man.

I have read this article and was impressed. But it doesn't mention John Hanson being the first Black President under the Articles of Confederation, who was a Moor. Can anyone tell me anymore about him. Back then the term was only for one year, but in that year he seemed to have accomplished a lot. I think that if we are going to tell the truth, it should be the whole truth. Tell from the very beginning and not just with the beginning of the Constitution. But thank you, this information will be added with what I have found to help my 2nd grade students have more references to look at for their Black History papers next month. Thanks again.

As a Canadian, I really liked this new American president because he has a strong vision for my neighbour "America". His words can really capture the confidence of many that he will make things right as a president..(I'm not black so it's definitely NOT because of his skin color). What I don't understand is why the large community of blacks bringing back news from decades ago about Civil rights?...or Martin Luther King's hard fought dream?..or BET hosting a show called King to Obama?...or saluting the "black power" hand sign?

You know in Canada, if the word "black" is used to describe a criminal; the black community would call it "racial profiling" that it shouldn't be used and yet black people continues to use that word throughout anywhere. I thought we have fought for diversity and yet the black communities continues to separate themselves from the rest of us.

I really liked this photo from the newspaper today showing a black guy wearing a black t-shirt saying "my president is black".

A decrease in black crimes now?

I have always been taught to look at each person as an individual and to never classify anyone. Unfortunately all I ever hear is reverse racism. The news interviewed a black woman the other night and her comment was "We've been verified now that we have a black president". Did the black people vote for Obama because he's black or did they vote for him because he is the right person for the job? It's too bad that everyone has to put a label on him instead of calling him "An American President" and letting him unify all of us.

Thank You for publishing some hidden information about this country's history. I've known this for a number of years, but finally it is in print. When I tell people about this and some other interesting information, concerning Black facts or history. I usually have people tell me it isn't so. Someone has made up this stuff. Others say it is about time we are finding out the true history of this country.

I was really impressed by the fact that has been stated in this article. i could tell that obama is logically the first black president. however, clinton has been considered one of the black president. but from my point, obama is really the first black president for the united states.

I titled this message alert because. I truly feel the need to alert some of you who have written on this subject matter. It's truly funny how we can joke with one another, eat with one another, even become best friends. And take part in such things like school, work, and gatherings. But when it boils down to it even though we can unite and do all those things. In our hearts some of us still hold a racil rope and we dangle on this rope even hang from. Whites hanging from one blacks hanging from the other. I wonder will we ever stop hanging and let go. Let go and let GOD lead us into unity. As people and not us and them...Yet my words will be spit on and laughed at and mocked I'm sure. But I dont care. I can even needle out some of those racil rope danglers on this page. Like those who say the "Black community". Or my favorite "why do blacks seperate them selves from us" let me just add that that was very racist and ignorant okay. Second we need to wake up and slap any one we see trying to seperate the new United Unified States Of America

Dwight Eisenhower who was president before JFK two terms had a black grandmother. This was common knowledge and was reported in the 70s in Ebony magazine!Dinah shore had a black grand mother also, now Carol Channing has come out and said she always was proud of her heritage. How come the fact that Thomas Jefferson had black roots never came out? If he tried to hide or extinguish the truth as he did his relations with Sally Hemings the more suspect folks will be. Race is a sad fact in this country!

Is Obama really not black enough? Or are we just not civilized enough to recognized a black man who has good common sense and does not act "ghetto". Are we really a world who still cares about color. Its 2009 people we have to stop living in a world of color. If you want to be racist then you can go in your back and dig a hole jump in it and bury yourself alive. Obama your black enogh for me if that even makes since I love you and you will for ever be my president you made a big difference in my life and you made me relize just because im "colored" I can still make a change and a difference in life

There needs to be major corrections made in anything pertaining to President Obama. He is not the first black President rather he is the first biracial President. As someone who is black and white like our president I know the feeling and the treatment he received because he was mixed. As he once said in an article here in Chicago, when I hail a cab, or walk down the street people see me as black. I know that feeling. When I walk down the street people see me as a person who is Spanish. WRONG!

I recall my German and Irish mother asking me one day if I was upset at being part white and it was the most moving moment in my life. From that day forward I never felt that one drop of black blood meant I was 100% black. I knew and know I am German, Irish, Black and Native American Indian. Thank you mommy and daddy.

The article provides some interesting information. In order to be birracial, an individual would have to be the product of 2 distinct races. In the United States, African Americans are an ethnic gorup comprised of a multitude of racial and ethnic origins. An individual like Barack Obama considers himself a Black man, so be it. I am curious to know why only prominent African Americans with recent mixed heritages are identified as not 100% black or biracial. Are some people just as interested in documenting the statistics for all of the birracial criminals and social derelicts? Or is it just if they're intelligent, prominent, gifted or powerful, we must ascertain the % of white blood? As an African American woman if they're black when they commit a crime then they're black when they become President.

Obama does not call him self Bi-racial he says he is African American. If Mr. Obama was not the president of the United Staes no one would care weather he was bi-racial or not, but since he is President people want to lable him as bi-racial. If that was the case all humans are bi-racial because like it or not we are ALL of African Decent. When some who is "bi-racial" gets arrested and they have black in them they are called black not "bi-racial", so sorry American your President is Black, deal with it. People should have know one day we would be in the white house. With all the horrible things white people have done and continue to do to Black people we still managed to get into the white house..I love my Black President Mr. Black Barak Obama!!!! .

Okay, I don't have a problem with Obama as a person and I have heard everything that being him as the first black presidentHow about John Hanson? Why is it that in our history some people can't lighten up the fact at certain things.Obama is going to have a tough time in office as to what he can do to better this country. His predacesor was the worst ever. Then again Obama is a figure head for this country.Obama is biracial and was brought up by two white women..

First let me say that OUR PRESIDENT IS BLACK... I'm tired of this racial issue. There is always someone out there trying to take away African American glory, every time we do what white America calls out to be the impossible there's someone there to bring us down. Let's not be ignorant about the issue here... prior to now how many people do you know went shouting around that any other president was black... i'll wait cause im sure you cant think of anyone. Thomas Jefferson, if any "white" back then believed he held a percent of black in him he would have never made it into office. After he did make it into office i'm sure people weren't shouting out they had a black person in office. Had that been the case the man probably would have been killed within moment's o f the news, due to the racial issue being so thick. It really doesn't matter how you try to put it, or how white you try to make Obama look, he is what he is deal with it. Decades later, and here we are this is what its coming down to still not the ability of the man but his race! .

Article says "he strongly resembles his Kenyan father"... but that just is not true! He doesn't look anything like his father... his features belong almost totally to his mother. If I didn't know better, I'd choose Frank Marshall Davis as far more likely to be his father than Barack Obama Sr. Compare Barack Jr. and Davis side by side and you'll see. Obama Sr. has classic southern African features, but the president has none of those, not even close. .

Our incumbent President couldn't have come at a better time for the U.S., after the complete mess two terms of the prior administration left of this country. The fact that he is black is only a plus. Black men in this country have to work twice as hard as their white counterparts to obtain the same level of recognition and success.Already President Obama has made great strides across the globe in improving the American condition both domestically and its relationships overseas. His accomplishments in such a short time are truly unprecedented by any modern U.S President.I would like to say that the fact that our President is black is in my opinion irrelevant. However truth be told, I believe this fact is actually a major factor in the continued success of our Chief of State. As for all the people who state that Obama isn't "black enough" - whatever that means - in actuality he is more black than many persons that consider themselves as African-American. Obama's father was a native Kenyan, right out of Africa, and Barack was born a U.S citizen in Hawaii. So he is truly "African American", only one generation removed. Unlike most black americans who are centuries removed from any African ancestry. It is only my hope that of everything that our President accomplishes in office, one thing should stand above all others. That finally America will cease its race/ethnicity obsessed bigoted mentality. .

This article wasn't surprising to me at all. When growing up as an African American male I felt attending school was always quite puzzling to me especially when it came to studying American history. I always knew in the back of my mind that the truth was being withheld for some reason. Basically what was being taught was a big lie. I've never brought into the accounts being made about our forefathers of this country. It is just amazing that the truth is coming out in bits and pieces. It no wonder that this country has always had problems when it came to race relations. We are a nation that continues to be in denial of who we really are. Until we face our fears of who we really are, admit to ourshelves who we really are, and then have acceptance of who we really are. That is when the healing process will begin. We only can obtain freedom if we start letting go of those old mindsets..

As our first African American president we should cherish him and respect what he does for our country .I mean we have to admit this man is making a big effort in making a peace in this community.war! what is it good for ? its good for nothing. what do we gain from war ?think about it. if were fighting for peace . you have to destroy it build it ..

I am a Caucasian male who has lived the majority of my life in Texas. I have said for several years that I would be surprised if I did not have "African American blood" in my veins. I have not said this because of any particular traits. My father's family has been on this continent since the mid 1600's. I find it hard to believe that there has been no mixing of the races in all that time. I also think this explains Lincoln's determination to free the slaves. I heard a story on the History Channel about Lincoln. When he was a teen, he & a friend of his helped a man deliver goods which were hauled on a barge up the river. At one docking point Lincoln is said to have observed a slave auction taking place. Legend has it that Lincoln told his friend, "If I ever get a chance I'm going to hit that (slavery) & hit it hard." I plan to read more on this topic. .

Obama is the first president to acknowledge that he is Black and/or African American. If the others did have Black blood flowing through their veins, they definitely wasn't forthcoming with that information..

It is thrilling enough to learn from your text that even the third president of the United States was black and that five out of the 43 predecessors of Obama are of black ancestry. I cant say much, the very name he bears says it all that he is black than white. let's simply give that credit,it wouldn't do us any harm. However, everyone should know that racism wouldn't do us any good. The champions like civil right activists envisaged that we live as ONE not as divided in terms of color in that way their dreams wouldn't have been achieved. Remember, these activists were not blacks alone but white also who in their sound judgment simply wanted fairness. To them(those whites) and the blacks I salute.I can trust that at least three out of the five acclaimed black presidents would be true especially that of Abraham Lincoln and any other who really fought for the blacks. For all you know, you can't feel so much for someone if secretly you hold no traces of his blood. But whatever, I'm proud of America for electing a President not because he is black or white but simply because they see him as able. To my black counterparts I say, let not the realization of one black ends our ability to even soar than that in the area of dignity, nobility, chastity, creativity, and all other ethics that you can trace in your black heritage that we are a people of bravery, history and heroism. If not so, like the British and the French wouldn't run away from our continent just as they did in America and granted freedom to that great nation. To this end I say Long live America; Long live Obama: Long live both Black and white race..

Everyone keeps talking about this election as progress. Its a step back. We will have real progress when a black man, women, latino, etc runs and no one talks about the fact that they are black, women, etc. More importantly no one votes for or against the person because they are black, white, women, etc. That will be progress. .

Let me say something...Do you think those presidentS before Obama considered themselves to be Proud Black Men? If they were so black why would their "people" be kept in slavery for so long? One of the reaosns I voted for Obama was because he is not ashamed of who he is. I have a very mixed background and I am proud to say I am an African American women. I like Bill Clinton but if Obama and Bill were in the same place at the same time 80yrs ago the KKK were coming through the place to stir ruckus, who do you think would be hung on the tree that night. My grandad is white (jewish) and I love my POP but I wouldn't consider myself to be white.....Come on people...let's be real about this. BOTH of my grandmothers are African American and Native american (blackfoot) and my other granddad is cuban....so what am I? Well... my mom is AA, Native American and and My dad is African American and Jewish. The way I see it....the commmon denominator is African American. We are ALL mixed but I believe you are what you are proud to be and I am proud be be an American that just happens to have more of a black ancestry. I am African American. .

Regardless of what was said in the article, President Obama is the 1st Black president. He is Black, none of the other Presidents mentioned above were actually Black. They may have had Black ancestors but they were not Black. When most Americans think a Black person, we don't think of a person that looks White and may have a Black ancestor. We think of a person that is actually Black. President is the first American Black President. I am so proud of our country! I am proud that we voted him in as President. He was judged on character and not his color! .

I was just wondering how American has come to call obama the first black President. The last time I checked his mother was white!! Would that not make him the first by-racial President of American? I find it interesting that Americans have forgot that fact so fast. I guess American only care about putting a black president in the White House. Let's make history American with a man that just came into the spot light Wake up America.
