Nearly half of Americans don't know that Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama is a Christian and 13 percent still believe he is a Muslim, according to a new poll by the Pew Research Center. The survey asked, "Do you happen to know what Barack Obama's religion is? Is he Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, atheist, agnostic or something else?" The results show little change in voters' perception of Obama's religious beliefs. In June, 12 percent believed he was a Muslim, and in March, 10 percent of Americans believed he was a Muslim.

I find it interesting that there are still so many uninformed people regarding Obama's religion. However, I find it even more interesting that this should be an issue at all. What possible difference could/should/would it make to his ability to govern the United States as President? What are we, as a nation, doing voting into the highest ranking office in the world on the basis of religion?
