Prominent California Republicans Oppose Prop. 8

Two prominent California Republicans came out against Proposition 8 last week, encouraging voters to reject the measure, which would ban same-sex marriage in the state.

Former U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell joined Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca in strongly condemning the proposition. Campbell argued that the proposal was anti-Republican, since conservatives traditionally favor a libertarian approach to social issues.

"Republicans believe deeply that government should be limited," Campbell said in a written statement in the libertarian magazine Reason. "Government has no business making distinctions between people based on their personal lives. That's why, as a Californian and a Republican … I will be voting No on Proposition 8."

Many other Golden State Republicans oppose Proposition 8, including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders.
