Black Hawk: Illinois Sauk Indian warrior who fought to have American Indians retain lands and traditions.

 

Sacagawea: Member of the Shoshone tribe and only women known to be a part of the Lewis and Clark expedition .

 

Chief Joseph: Leader of the Nez Perce tribe whose lands were in what is now Oregon and Washington.

 

Sequoyah: American Indian scholar who created an alphabet for the Cherokee tribe, which advanced and helped thousands of Cherokee to become literate

 

Osceola: American Indian leader during the Second Seminole War of 1835 in Florida

 

Sitting Bull: Chief of the Lakota nation, best known for fighting against General George A. Custer in the battle at Little Big Horn in 1876, namely Custer's Last Stand.

 

Squanto: Helped settlers of Plymouth Colony survive by teaching them fishing and the planting of corn

 I would suggest you feature a larger proportion of
more contemporary Indians. American Indians always suffer from being
viewed as museum artifacts. Here are some modern famous Indians:
writer,Sherman Alexie; Singer/ Buffy St. Marie;Actress/Irene
Bedard;Actor/Adam Beach; senator (Mt)Jonathan Windy Boy.
