Jim Yong Kim, a former director of the World Health Organization's HIV/AIDS department, has been named president of Dartmouth College, becoming the first Asian American to head one of the Ivy League's elite universities, AFP reports.

The 49-year-old Kim, who was born in South Korea, is renowned for his work in public health, particularly in expanding access to HIV/AIDS treatment to the developing world.

"Our goal at the World Health Organization was to raise aspirations about what can be achieved in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and I see the same vision and sense of purpose at Dartmouth today," Kim said in a statement.
