In its third year on the list, Accenture has moved up 15 spots. The recognition is well deserved since this large global consultancy increasingly has emphasized an inclusive workplace culture.
Sponsoring diversity and inclusion by actively engaging in local diversity-related activities is a key factor in determining senior executive ratings, which are used for compensation.

Accenture has superb work/life programs, including tuition reimbursement, financial education, transit discounts, online health coaching, ergonomics assessments, flexible work arrangements and transitions, an eldercare program, a new-parents toolkit and voluntary service overseas. The firm also has excellent benefits for same-sex partners of employees.

The 13 employee-resource groups include an Experienced Hire Networking Group, a Military Interest Group, a Men's Interest Group, an Abilities Access Network Interest Group, and a Work Life/Wellness Interest Group. Forty-eight percent of employees are members of these groups. Accenture has "communities" that communicate through networking and social events, community newsletters, web sites, office-wide activities and philanthropic events. Communities are typically comprised of 100--150 employees spanning all levels, and they meet quarterly to share content that helps build a common understanding of Accenture's global and local strategy, market positioning and business performance.

Accenture has a thorough and comprehensive diversity-training program, which it tracks through a scorecard. The firm tells us that on a 5.0 scale, diversity-training sessions receive a 4.7 score on average, which is significantly higher than other training sessions' average. The retention and promotion of participants is also tracked.

The firm has a long history of philanthropic commitment to communities and offers mentoring and assistance in the Washington, D.C., school district as well as help to organizations such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the American Indian Graduate Center and INROADS.

Accenture is also constantly improving its supplier diversity. Accenture became a corporate member of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce in 2007 and is now working with the group to identify suppliers. Accenture is also upgrading its online supplier-diversity management tool and registration site.

Bill Green, Chairman and CEO

"We have always believed at Accenture that inclusion and diversity are central to being a high-performance business. It is one of our top priorities at Accenture, and even more so in challenging times when we need to bring to our clients the ideas, creativity, skills and capabilities of our diverse, global work force. In today's world, our clients expect diversity--in our teams, our people and our points of view--and so do the women and men who choose to build careers at Accenture."

LaMae Allen deJongh, Managing Director of U.S. Human Capital and Diversity

"At all times, bringing Accenture's core values to life is critical to our people as well as the communities where we live and work--and ultimately, to maximizing our ability to deliver high performance to clients. As we navigate uncertainty in the business environment, our commitment to a diverse and inclusive culture allows us to provide a broad range of talent that is inspired by differences that we 'see and don't see'--like different management styles, thinking styles and experiences."
