More Americans Favor Same-Sex Marriage
Compiled by the DiversityInc staff - Oct 13, 2006

Since the 2004 election, same-sex marriage advocates have been working to gain support. Their efforts appear to be paying off.

On Nov, 7, eight states will put the issue to the voters. Poll results from local media results indicate voters will support the LGBT community, rejecting measures banning same-sex marriage. A mid-September Rocky Mountain News poll showed 58 percent supported a ballot measure to create domestic partnerships that would give same-sex couples many of the rights of married couples, such as health-insurance benefits and hospital visitation, USA Today reports.

"It could be a watershed year," said Carrie Evans, Colorado state legislative director at the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-and-lesbian-advocacy group.

USA Today reports that in
Arizona, the most recent poll on a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage showed 51 percent of registered voters were opposed and only 38 percent supported it. A similar poll conducted in July in South Dakota showed a similar measure trailing 49 percent to 41 percent.

"We have a very good chance of killing this," said Ken Clark of Arizona Together, a gay-rights group.
