In its second year on the list, Capital One Financial Corp. demonstrates an increasingly inclusive workplace culture, with progressive benefits, strong employee-resource groups and thorough diversity training. |
Founder, Chairman and CEO Richard D. Fairbank has been the catalyst for the company's surge as a national diversity leader. He drove the creation of the company values, which center around "Excellence" and "Do The Right Thing." Diversity figures prominently in the attributes and behaviors that further articulate their meaning: "Best People" ("value diversity of people"), "Open" ("value diversity of ideas"), and the overarching "Respect for Each Other" attribute. The Performance Management system at Capital One is based on the company-stated values.
These values are reflected in the company's increasingly diverse work force, which mirrors its customer base. For example, the work force is 40.6 percent Black, Latino and Asian. New hires are 49 percent Black, Latino and Asian. The work force is also 62.9 women and women are 65.3 percent of new hires.
The bank also has excellent work/life benefits, including childcare in the corporate headquarters, fertility assistance, foster-care assistance, foster-care reimbursement, expectant mothers' designated parking, lactation rooms, a resource for adoptive parents and associates considering adoption, a resource for current and prospective parents, onsite health centers with services available for associates and their families, an onsite mobile mammography program, military-leave compensation, and tuition assistance for undergraduate and graduate work. Capital One also has first-rate benefits for same-sex domestic partners of employees.
The company has eight employee-resource groups, including groups for adoptive parents and telecommuters. Capital One gets a perfect score on our criteria for employee groups, including having a senior executive as a member and using them for recruitment and marketing purposes. The company also has mandatory diversity training for its entire work force, held every month for a full day.
Capital One puts 64.5 percent of its philanthropy into charities aimed at multicultural groups, including the UNCF, the National Urban League, Communities in Schools and the Richmond Organization for Sexual Minority Youth. |
