Earning a spot on the list for the third time in four years, Toyota Motor North America has worked hard to increase the inclusiveness of its work force, largely through strong employee-resource groups. The company also has demonstrated consistently high philanthropy in multicultural communities.
Toyota Motor North America in recent years has made a major effort to increase its work-force diversity. For example, Blacks, Asians and Latinos were 32.2 percent of the work force but 39.1 percent of new hires; and while women were only 25.8 percent of the work force, they were 36.1 percent of new hires.

Toyota's increasingly inclusive workplace can be attributed at least in part to the growing strength of its 11 employee-resource groups: Administrative Professionals/Young Professionals; African Americans for Success/African American Collaborative; Christian Fellowship/Talking About God; Diversity in Motion; Team Toyota Volunteers; Toyota Organization for the Development of Latinos; Gay and Lesbian Alliance (Bisexual Transgender & Friends); Toyota Asian American Society Alliance; TORQUE/Women's Leadership Exchange Network/Women's Leadership Forum; and Veterans Association.

Toyota also has thorough diversity training for its entire work force, held every month for more than one day. The training is performed by both internal and external trainers. Metrics to ensure the success of the training include: a survey at the end of the training session; an annual diversity scorecard; a diversity continuum; and an employee-opinion survey.

A total of 24.4 percent of philanthropic donations go to multicultural groups, including Boys & Girls Clubs, UNCF, National Council of La Raza, Urban League, American Indian College Fund and the Hispanic Scholarship College Fund.
