Deloitte CEO Barry Salzberg has been a visible force for diversity for several years. Both in his spoken and written words, Salzberg constantly emphasizes how critical diversity is to Deloitte's business. |
Salzberg, who personally chairs the internal diversity council, holds Deloitte's partners and managers accountable for diversity success. Compensation is partly based on individual performance evaluations that value diversity and inclusion. Chief Diversity Officer Allen Thomas, who also is Deloitte's managing partner for partner services, is a direct report to Salzberg.
Deloitte is the only Big Four firm to have an external diversity council, and it relies on the strategic advice of that group, which meets quarterly and is headed by noted civil-rights attorney Weldon Latham.
The firm has a very robust mentoring program, with 84 percent of its managers participating. Deloitte has measurable goals for its mentors and mentees, trains them and follows up on their success. The firm also has progressive work/life benefits, including subsidized backup child and dependent care; paid maternity/paternity benefits, including adoption benefits; periodic reduced workload arrangements; a national tuition-assistance program; a national health and fitness program, including health fairs, flu shots, cholesterol screenings and reimbursements for membership fees; paid volunteer time; professional-association membership-fee reimbursement; free or reduced-cost meals/snacks/beverages; and a group legal-services plan. Deloitte also has excellent benefits for same-sex domestic partners of employees.
Diversity training is a requirement for all new hires and must be completed within the first six months of employment. Employees are tracked to confirm compliance with this requirement, and trainees must obtain an 80 percent pass rate on the final exam after completing the course.
The firm also has a long history of philanthropic endeavors aimed at multicultural communities. Its current endeavors include the Jackie Robinson Foundation, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, INROADS, the National Asian American Society of Accountants, the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, and the National Black MBA Association. |
