Of the Big Four accounting firms, KPMG has come the furthest in its diversity efforts in the last two years. The firm has made diversity a major part of its business strategy, and the results are evident in its move up the list from No. 49 last year. |
Chairman Timothy P. Flynn has demonstrated a strong commitment to internal and external diversity, including serving on the board of Major League Baseball's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities, a worldwide youth outreach program. Although KPMG is a partnership and thus does not have bonuses, Flynn signs off on the partner-compensation model, which has a strong diversity component.
The firm elevated its diversity efforts in 2008, appointing Angela Avant as its first partner in charge of diversity. She is a direct report to Flynn.
KPMG has a strong mentoring program, which is proven by the success of women at the firm. Women are 45 percent of all managers but received 48 percent of management promotions. And women are 30 percent of Flynn's direct reports. The firm also has excellent work/life benefits, including retirement transition (such as part-time or virtual work), paid time for volunteering/community outreach/professional-association activities, and backup childcare and eldercare. KPMG also has great benefits for same-sex partners of employees.
The firm has first-rate mandatory diversity training, including Respect & Dignity and Diversity in the Workplace for all its partners. Its six employee groups also sponsor training and professional development.
An astounding 56 percent of its philanthropic efforts go to multicultural groups, including the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, The PhD Project and the Minority Doctoral Scholarship Program.
The global-diversity effort, led by Lord Michael Hastings, global head of citizenship and diversity for KPMG International, has been examining global developments and sustainability. |
