A constant on the DiversityInc Top 50, Prudential is known for its strong community philanthropy and excellent work/life benefits. |
Chairman, President and CEO John Strangfeld ties 10 percent of senior-executive bonuses to diversity goals. He personally meets with employee-resource groups and chairs the diversity council, which meets monthly. Of the 14-member board of directors, there are two Black members, one Asian member, one Latino member and two women members.
Prudential has very progressive work/life benefits, including a Mothers at Work lactation program, adoption aid of up to $10,000 for eligible expenses, adoption leave and consultation service, foster-care benefit, eldercare, care circles in which employees create web sites to establish care networks for loved ones, Personal Volunteer Day/Global Volunteer Day, community giving and matching program, and a Community Champions program.
The company also has a strong mentoring program, in which individual business units sponsor formal, customized, inclusive mentoring initiatives for employees. Managers and employees participate in those programs as both mentors and mentees. One program, for example, involves "reverse mentoring" of senior executives by individuals (who may be "junior" in rank) from traditionally underrepresented groups.
The company allocates 90 percent of its philanthropic endeavors to multicultural groups, including Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark, Harlem Children's Zone, National Urban League, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, INROADS, the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the UNCF. |
