In its third year on the list, Cummins demonstrates strong workplace best practices, improving supplier diversity and continued CEO commitment.
Chairman and CEO Tim Solso meets regularly with employee-resource groups and personally reviews and signs off on diversity metrics. The nine-member board of directors has two Black members and two women members.

The company has strong global values and refuses to do business in countries that don't have the same human-rights values.

The company has 12 strong employee-resource groups, including a Chinese affinity group, Launch (for employees with less than five years at the company), an LGBT affinity group, a Greater Middle East affinity group, a multiethnic affinity group, a special-needs affinity group, a veterans' affinity group, a South Asia affinity group, and a Russian and Eastern European affinity group. The company gets a perfect score for its employee-group best practices, including having a senior executive on the groups and using them for recruitment and marketing purposes.

Cummins has good work/life benefits as well, including strong benefits for same-sex partners of employees. And the company has mandatory diversity training for its entire work force, held monthly for a full day.

Cummins also has an improving supplier-diversity program, with 7.5 percent of Tier I (direct contractor) procurement going to minority-owned suppliers. The company offers mentoring, training and financial assistance to its diverse suppliers.
