On the list for the seventh year in a row, Starwood demonstrates strength in all four areas of the survey: CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Corporate and Organizational Communications, and Supplier Diversity.
Twenty percent of senior-executive bonuses are tied to diversity goals. President and CEO Frits Van Paasschen chairs the diversity council, which meets quarterly.

The company has an increasingly diverse work force, reflecting its customer base. The U.S. work force is 51 percent Latino, Black, Asian and American Indian.

Starwood has progressive work/life benefits, including paid time off for volunteering and community outreach/professional associations, sign-language courses and work/life counselors. The company also offers excellent benefits for same-sex domestic partners of employees.

Fifty percent of Starwood's philanthropic endeavors go to multicultural communities, including the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, UNCF, New York School for the Deaf, INROADS, National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, Jackie Robinson Foundation, National Black MBA Association and the National Society of Hispanic MBAs.

The company gets a perfect score for the way it tells the world about its diversity commitment on its web site, including having images of people with disabilities and content about LGBT people.

Starwood also has a strong supplier-diversity program, allocating 5 percent of its total Tier I (direct contractor) procurement spend with minority-owned suppliers, 6 percent with women-owned suppliers and 1 percent with LGBT-owned suppliers.

Frits van Paasschen, President and CEO

"Hiring and retaining diverse talent, contracting with diverse suppliers and marketing our brands to all potential customers simply just makes sound business sense. Starwood's diversity and inclusion efforts are fundamental components to our company's ability to outperform the competition, increase shareholder value, and show the organization's commitment to the economic growth of all the communities in which we operate regardless of the current economic climate. Starwood making The 2009 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list serves as a mile marker that we are headed in the right direction along our journey."
