For the fifth time in six years, General Mills is on this list. The company demonstrates a strong multicultural outreach to customers, including philanthropy and supplier diversity. |
The company's 13-member board has five female, two Black and one Latino members.
General Mills has unbiased retention throughout its work force and management, meaning workers stay at similar levels, across race/ethnicity and gender. This is partly attributed to its 20 excellent employee-resource groups, which include an American Indian Council, Consumer Insights Diversity Council, Customer Service Center Diversity Council, Sales Diversity Council, Betty's Family (LGBT employees) and Black Senior Leaders in Marketing Diversity Groups. Fifty-five percent of employees are members of one of these groups, which have senior executives as members and are used for recruitment, talent development and marketing.
Thirty-four percent of philanthropic endeavors are aimed at multicultural groups, including: American Indian College Fund; Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund; Consortium for Graduate Study in Management; Congressional Black Caucus Foundation; Challenge U Scholarship Program; Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the United Negro College Fund.
The company spends 6.1 percent of its total Tier 1 (direct contractor) procurement budget with minority-owned suppliers and 3.7 percent with women-owned suppliers. Supplier diversity is included in RFPs and General Mills offers mentoring, training and financial assistance to its diverse suppliers. |
