Despite the election of President Barack Obama, most Blacks and whites still feel racism in America has not lessened, according to a poll conducted by CNN.

The poll, which surveyed more than 500 Blacks and whites, found that 50 percent of Black respondents and 56 percent of white respondents don't feel things have gotten better--results that further underscore perceptions of discrimination in America.

Here are other highlights from the poll:

  • Thirty percent of Blacks say Obama's performance has exceeded their expectations; only 16 percent of whites agree
  • More than 60 percent of Blacks feel Obama has met their expectations, while 46 percent of whites do
  • Six percent of Blacks versus 35 percent of whites say Obama has not met their expectations
  • Forty-five percent of Blacks and 42 percent of whites say race relations will always be an issue in the United States
  • Fifty-five percent of Blacks are optimistic that race will eventually not be a problem in the United States, compared with 56 percent of whites

Yes, race will always be an issue in the US, as long as some people carry around a backpack of privilege that they neither acknowledge or understand. Because the people with the privilege, the power and the money are not likely to just hand any of those things over willingly for even-handed redistribution, race will always be an issue. I have always wished that the US could be like an episode of Star Trek, where in the future, that laugh at the notion that color used to matter, money used to matter, and we devalued each other and the Earth. Then I realize that I still leave here, in this society now, and that I am raising Black sons, who I fear for everday. Nuff said. .

I found the results of this poll encouraging. A similar majority of both Blacks and Whites are optimistic that race will eventually not be an issue in the U.S. This is good news.It is also not a surprise that fewer Whites than Blacks believe that Obama has met their expectations. You could make an argument that this had something to do with race, but as someone who is not supportive of where Obama is taking our country, I can tell you my disapproval has nothing to do with race and everything to do with policy. We believe his policies are wrong. Frankly, I couldn't care less about his race. I'd be just as disapproving of a White man or woman with the same agenda that Obama has. As for Alyssa's comment, it is the fear of "redistribution" that scares us. I agree that Blacks were treated unfairly for many years and in some areas, this may go on yet today, but widespread redistribution is not the answer. It is not the wealthy who suffer under such plans. It is the regular man or woman who faced challenges in their lives too who ends up having their wealth redistributed under such plans. If the only solution is redistribution from Whites to Blacks, then race will probably continue to be an issue in the U.S. and new generations of non-Black people who don't have the experience of segregation and racial predjudice will develop a new racism built from a resentment of watching their hard-earned wealth be redistributed by our government based on race. I pray this doesn't happen and race can become a non-issue with time. .

The race issue in America is a subset of rich VS poor. The rich manipulates racial antagonisms between working class Americans to keep the focus off of how poorly our country take care of it's citzens. For example the Dutch offer new mothers 9 months matarity level and fathers three months after the mother returns to work. You don't hear bout these type of social benefits on the evening new here.America like to compare ourselves to struggling counties like Russia or Brazil so that we can feel good about our lack of true social security. .
