"Every day we make choices that send a message about our values," writes Human Rights Campaign (HRC) President Joe Solmonese in the just-released "Buying for Equality" guide. Filled with hundreds of companies, products and services that scored the highest on the foundations' 2010 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), using this annual guide, along with the below list of DiversityInc Top 50 companies, will ensure that your hard-earned dollars are going toward companies committed to diversity.

"Buying for Equality" sorts businesses and brands into product categories and then color-categorizes each by its 2010 CEI score, a 0- to 100-point scale based on whether or not its policies support LGBT people. The criteria include antidiscrimination protections, domestic-partner benefits, diversity training, transgender wellness benefits and advertising practices. The guide is broken down as follows:

*Green indicates businesses or brands that scored 80 to 100 percent on the 2010 CEI

*Blue illustrates HRC corporate partners, which must maintain a CEI score of 85 or above

*Yellow signifies businesses/brands with CEI scores of 46 to 79 "that have taken steps toward a fair-minded workplace, but where there is still progress to be made"

*Red shows companies/brands with CEI scores of 45 to 0. Companies in red with a question mark, however, indicate that they have not responded to the survey and their policies are unclear

The "Buying for Equality" guide is downloadable from HRC's web site, and within a few weeks, the organization plans to launch an iPhone application, allowing socially conscious shoppers to download the guide to their phone for quick reference for the holiday season.
