This year, we started our first separate list for hospital systems, for the same reasons we pulled out utility companies two years ago—their human-capital demographics are very regional and, in the case of most hospital systems, disproportionately female, so comparing them with other companies/industries isn’t always relevant.
These five hospital systems listed below are all exceptionally strong. Here are some aggregate facts about them:
- They all have exceptional CEO commitment, with 80 percent of their CEOs signing off on executive compensation tied to diversity, meeting regularly with employee-resource groups and having personal quotes about diversity on their web sites
- Their workforces are 63 percent women and 32 percent Black, Latino, Asian and American Indian. Their management is also 63 percent women and is 20 percent Black, Latino, Asian and American Indian
- Eighty percent use social media to reach multicultural talent and customers
Here’s a fact about what makes each of these hospitals stand out:
No. 1: Henry Ford Health System
President and CEO Nancy Schlichting has a deep and strong commitment to diversity. The company’s web site has a strong diversity commitment in an entire section that is clear about its importance to the organization.
No. 2: Brigham and Women’s Hospital
The workforce is 35 percent Black, Latino, Asian and American Indian and 70 percent women.
No. 3: Massachusetts General Hospital
Sixteen percent of its ad spending goes to multicultural media (aimed primarily at Blacks, Latinos, Asians, American Indians and LGBT people).
No. 4: University Hospitals Health System
The hospital has strong work/life benefits, including telecommuting, flexible hours, adoption assistance, paternity leave, lactation programs and onsite religious accommodations.
No. 5: Cleveland Clinic
The hospital has 11 strong employee-resource groups, including groups for LGBT employees and employees with disabilities, as well as a group based on religion.

I see the Duke Health System didn’t make the cut.
There are about 100 hospitals that go by the name “University Hospitals”. Which one is this?
Ok, yes 63 percent women, is this because Nursing is a prodominantly female proffession. If it were a construction site then I would say that it is a diverse company. I work 1st shift and I am still looking for the 20 percent black and latino managers. The CCF still works on the Good OL’ Boy policy. Minorities are being called in for interviews to comply with EEOC laws, but there is no law that says they should hire them over there Good OL’ Boy policy.
